Kadapa (formerly known as Cuddapah) is a city (municipal corporation) in the Rayalseema region of the south-central part of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the district headquarters of Kadapa district. As of 2011 Census of India, the city had a population of 344078.
It is one of the oldest municipalities in Kadapa District and is located 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of the Penna River. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Nallamala and Palakonda hills lying on the tectonic landscape being sandwiched between the Eastern and Western ghats. Black and Red ferruginous soils occupy the region. The city is nicknamed "Gadapa" (which means 'Threshold') since it is the gateway from the west to the sacred hills of Tirumala, which is known for its connections to Venkateswara Swamy.
The city is famous for its temple of Sri Laxmi Venkateswara located in Devunikadapa. It is historically been known as the gateway to the temple of Venkateswara. It has other tourist attractions like Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary and Ameen Peer Dargah. With hills like Nallamala, Palamuru and rivers like Pinakini Papaghni, it offers some adventurous tourist places.
Kadapa has been under the rule of different Kingdoms like The Cholas, The Kings of Vijayanagara Empire, The Nizam Nawabs and The British Empire from 11th century to the 20th century which helped in the origin of diversified doctrines in the city. It is also well known for its spicy and culinary food.
